Ewald Schrevelius’ funeral tablet

This funeral tablet of Ewald Schrevelius can be seen on a column of Pieterskerk in Leiden.

The ephitaph was erected by his vidow, Maria van Swaenswijck.

“The two human jawbones on the pediment suggest that Schrevelius specialized in dentistry.

Based on an 18th century drawing, the top of the pediment used to include a burning urn, flanked in the corners by an hourglass and a skull”(1).
