Filippa Mareri’s monastery

Filippa Mareri‘s¹ monastery is located in Borgo San Pietro (Piazza Santa Filippa, 17). Formerly, the town was a long way downstream; nowadays it is situated by the river Salto, on the bank of an artificial lake at 550 metres above sea level, in the middle of Circolano. Filippa Mareri’s monastery² stands in the new residential area, rebuilt on behalf of fascist government, after a flood destroyed the old one in 1940.

THE NEW MONASTERY’S FACADE

The new monastery’s facade dates back to 1940, when the complex was rebuilt after the flood.

THE MONASTERY’S CLOISTER:

The cloister is a constituent part of the monastery, consisting of a central uncovered area, which leads to the main convent rooms.
In the middle of the cloister there is the statue of Saint Francis.
