Carlo Matteucci’s bust

This marble bust on a column of Carlo Matteucci possibly marks his burial along the western gallery of the Campo Santo (monumental cemetery) of Pisa.

As it can be read on the side of the bust, it was sculpted by Giovanni Dupré in 1869 in Florence.

On the basament, there is an almost illegible inscription in Italian: “CARLO MATTEUCCI / FISICO FORLIVESE / …illegible…. / NON CHIESE ALLA MATERIA / LE RAGIONI DELLO [SPIRITO?] / MA NELLE SCIENZE CERCANDO LA GLORIA / TROVO’ IN ESSE DIO”.
