“The Mission of Mercy”(1857) by Jerry Barrett

This big oil-on-canvas of Florence Nightingale receiving the Wounded at the military hospital of Üsküdar (Scutari), Istanbul, can be seen in Room 21 of the National Portrait Gallery in London. It was painted in 1857 by Jerry Barrett, who inserted himself into the scene loking down from the window, right behind Nightingale.
