This fireplace was given in 1888 by George William Childs (1820-1894) owner of the Philadelphia Public Ledger. It was set up in the Locust Street building on the new third floor; then was brought to the new building. Silas Weir Mitchell, in announcing the gift in 1888, said that it was the most valuable gift ever given to the College by a layman. Sometimes referred to ad the “Memorial Chimney Piece”.
