Sanctuary of Asclepius, Nora

The remains of a Sanctuary of the god Asclepius can still be seen in the archaeological area of Nora, current Pula. The sanctuary is located on the promontory known as “the serpent’s point” (la punta del serpente). A sacred site of Punic and Roman origin, it was associated with healing and incubation rituals. The mosaics—now almost entirely lost—reportedly depicted naked men entwined in the coils of a serpent or engaged in therapeutic incubation rituals that took place during sleep.
